History – Once upon a time
The Schwellenmätteli as we know it today came into the ownership of the City of Bern from Johann von Bubenberg in 1360. At the time, the «Schweller» included the bed of the Aare, the right to set up weirs, land in the Matte district, as well as peripheral works and business.
The taverns were built at the time of the Zähringen family. Mainly fishermen and rafters were fed and housed in the «Gresis Hus» and the «Hofstatt». The construction of the large Aare weir, which still regulates the river waters today, dates back to 1900.
